MEMORIES OF MY GRANDFATHER

Yesterday marked 12 years since my grandfather’s passing and I still miss him every day. My family lived in a duplex with my grandparents, so my sister and I saw him every day of our lives until adulthood. He was hilariously funny with a quick wit; he was also extremely smart with a knowledge for facts and history and the English language that astounded me. He taught us all (his 4 daughters, their husbands, and his 10 grandchildren) so much, and I want to share a top 10 list of things I carry with me that my “Pa” greatly influenced. I loved him a ton but don’t think I realized how much he taught me until he was gone…I am very lucky to have had him.

  1. All the material things in the world will not replace people that you love and that love you in return.
  2. Enjoy the moments with people closest to you and tell them how great it is to be with them in the moment.
  3. The best lazy days are spent with your family, lounging on a chaise under the trees, with a tall iced coffee in hand and the radio on.
  4. Grow a garden every year – it is an amazing hobby and you get to eat delicious garden veggies every summer day.
  5. You can NEVER have enough Italian food. NEVER. And being Italian is the greatest thing in the world. 🙂
  6. A good Baby Ruth or Mary Jane candy should not be underestimated.
  7. Read as much as possible and never stop learning. Be curious. Ask questions. No degree, no matter how high or where from, can replace life experience and constant learnings.
  8. Tell jokes, sing songs out loud and play harmless pranks – everyone’s day is much better when filled with laughter.
  9. People take themselves way too seriously sometimes – remember that life is short and stay out of the drama.
  10. Simplicity is key. Whether it be food, clothes, music, movies – the classics are the best.
