Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Museum

A TRIP TO THE MUSEUM

If you are visiting Boston soon, or if you live here and have never been, I highly recommend a trip to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. We visited this past weekend and saw a wonderful exhibit currently running through this long weekend, The Inscrutable Eye: Watercolors by John Singer Sargent in Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Collection.

The museum houses an art collection of world importance, from paintings and sculpture to tapestries and decorative arts. I love the way the art is displayed as well – you can get up close and personal and actually feel as if you are in an opulent home rather than a museum. A fun fact, Isabella herself stipulated in her will that everything must remain as she had it installed – so there is a very vintage feel to it all.

Of all things at the museum, the courtyard garden (pictured below) is my favorite. Established in 1903, the garden is the heart of the museum and can be seen from nearly every corner of the main house. It is as peaceful as it is inspiring. I could sit there for hours and listen to the sound of the water fountain while taking in the amazing architecture surrounding it.

Happy Long weekend, everyone!
