The one thing I love about fashion is that it doesn’t stop at just the clothes there are some great books out there about the influential people in the world of fashion. I also just love to combine my passion for fashion and literature by reading fashion books . So I am so excited about this new book coming out about Isabella Blow. When you think of fashion you automatically think of the clothes and the label. Or when you pick up a fashion magazine you look at the pictures and the models and you never think about the people that bring it all together. Especially when it comes to designers, all that matters is who is wearing their designs and how can I afford these clothes myself. But everyone started somewhere and then lived up to their superstar status, but I feel a lot of them go unnoticed. One woman who I think goes unnoticed is Isabella Blow, it wasn’t until Alexander McQueen passed and then she was back in the news again. If you don’t know who she is you should definitely pre-order the book titled Isabella Blow written by Martina Rink with a forward by Phillip Treacy ($31.50) it will be available November 2010 but you can pre-order it now through amazon. I’m hoping it will be as influential as Isabella was herself.
Philip Treacy, the man who is writing the forward for this book was a young hat designer when he met Isabella; she loved his creations and took him under her wing. Through her he was introduced to established fashion industry people like the editors at Vogue, Manolo Blahnik and Rifet Ozbeck. He had a close relationship with her and continued to design hats made especially for her.
Isabella is also known for her admiration and inspiration on Alexander McQueen, in 1991 she purchased his entire degree collection (when he was a student) and helped him soar to greater heights. Blow was a stylist and muse for many, she started as an assistant for another influential woman in fashion, Anna Wintour. She worked for American Vogue, British Vogue and The Sunday Times. Unfortunately she committed suicide in 2007 but will always be remembered as an inspirational woman in fashion.
To me Isabella is a woman in fashion to look up to and reminds people like myself that there is still so much more out there that I haven’t quite seen and that it’s always a good thing when you meet new people. You never know what the future holds for you.
